RSS

RSS = Rich Site Summary/Real Simple Syndication

At vet.edna.edu.au there is a link to a slide cast "RSS for Educators" (http://docs.google.com/present/view?skipauth=true&id=dvpk9nm_66wj633cfw) that provides classroom applications for RSS as a small part of the presentation. Refer to slide 61 onwards.

Some applications suggested in this slide cast include:
  • Have students subscribe to each others blogs and/or the teachers blog
  • Have students and parents subscribe to your blog, podcast, or wiki feed to keep abreast of what is going on in class
  • RSS Feeds for News, Blog, and Website Searches
  • RSS Feeds for Bookmarks
  • All the feeds can be aggregated with the same feed readers used for blogs, podcasts, news, and other media sites
  • RSS Feeds for Media
  • Media hosting sites (e.g. YouTube, Flickr, etc.) organize individual media content (images, video, audio) with tags"

460616 Week 3

Have set up a wiki as a Personal Learning Environment (see Online Communications section in this blog). This has been great to bring together, in one spot, all or some of my experiences, resources, ideas, information etc. relative to my learnings in the area of IT in education.

Thinking of setting up something similar for my resume/CV.

460616 Week 2

Am curious how I will make best use of a wiki and a blog?

Think I will start a social bookmarking account. Have used delicious in the past tried to reactivate but have to start a new account with yahoo to use it. I dont want another online account, or another email address...it get so messy!!!!

OK already the blog has got me to connect or link all my accounts together on the blog. eg. podcast, delicious, voice thread etc. Perhaps now I will use them as they easily accessed.

460616 Week 1

Have just completed the first Skype discussion and its great to hear that this unit will not require listening to recorded lectures and has an experiential learning approach. I am thinking at this point that this environment will be like an online folder where I will keep all the information and learning so that when the access to the unit disappears after the unit is completed I will still have a record of resources and things I found to be important/interesting/of use in the future..

I have selected a wiki for PLE as I am familiar with this wiki environment. I like the ability to organise the learning into sections (pages) and that it easy to embed widgets, files, images, videos etc.

I considered facebook but do not wish to share my learning journey with all my facebook friends - not that I have hundreds.

However may change my mind and use google groups - see what happens next week after further discussion. I am not sure about access to google groups for others to contribute i.e. if they have to have a google account.

Virtual Learning Environment assessment:

Starting a new job in Faster care and Friends of Foster Care in recruitment, assessment and training. Considering setting up a learning environment for training, induction and strengthening the volunteer carers network across the region.Starting on 22-3-10 so will have to suss that out.

OK so finding a blog useful as an access point for all my online stuff. Its easy to add links and connections. However still like a wiki for organising information rather than date order posts.

460616 Flexible Learning Environments

Have not used this Blog for a long time. Thought I might reuse rather than set up a new blog for Flexible Learning Environments (460616). Want to reduce my "virtual" or "cyber" waste.
