Wiki & online group environment

Having been working on my VLE in an online group environment (Grouply) I am finding it fairly easy to use and organise things. I have been "banging on" previously about how much I like working in wiki's for the ease of organising information, Grouply is just as easy however. Wikis do allow discussion relative to each page and within the page. The online group, it seems so far, that there is only one discussion area.

In both cases I am wary of not making the pages too busy and having information and tasks easy to find especially when people are new to online interaction other than email.

Creating a presentation to embed in online community

OK people, I need some suggestions for narrating a powerpoint thus creating a presentation that I can embed in an online environment, so not just as a uploaded file.

I have tried using the narration within power point but had trouble hearing it. I have tried slideshare but needed to record an mp3 fille so I used a podcast for this. This is probably the best option but I again I can barely hear my voice.

So I guess my problem is not the application but recording my voice so it can be heard....any suggestions for overcoming this problem?

Decided on an online environment?

Have been searching for an online environment for my VLE. I didn't want to use a wiki because I wanted to explore other options but I wanted to be able to add widgets like video and learning objects. I wanted it be be free. I wanted to be able to manage the privacy level.

Ning would have been great but I looked at some alternatives.

I was unable to add widgets to google groups.

I checked out a number of others but I have decided on Grouply as it satisfies the "wants" I mentioned and a short video showed how easy it is to develop and add apps which sold me.

However, it seems in 2008 there were issues about the security of Grouply so I have not linked to my yahoo ID which seems to create the problem.

So far I have been able to add an online quizz and a voicethread. I have a discussion area, whiteboard, rss capabilities and the capacity to add new pages.

So far so good.

LO Vs SO

Ok a learning object provides learning through interaction/activity and a social object is a topic, theme, area of interest that people interact/communicate about.

Example:

Learning Object:

Title: Where is the Party at? - Alcohol
Competency: 21251VIC - General Education for Adults
Education Level: Certificate II
Type: Digital
Cost: Free

http://lorn.flexiblelearning.net.au/resultDetail?identifier=94

Social Object: People may be interested in communicating about the consumption of alchol by teenagers. Therefore the social object would be "teenage drinking".

I hope I am on the right track??? What do you think???

Virtual Learning Environment Assignment

Have started a new job with a family and children services organisation. My role involves recruiting, assessing and training Foster Carers and Friends of Foster Carers.

My first impulse is to start a wiki where training modules can be accessed online. However I have used wikisbefore and thought I would use Moodle instead as I have limted experience with moodle. I also want it to be private.

Any other suggestions or feedback?

Has anyone else used moodle that could give me some tips?

Hello Flexible Learning Environment champions.

Can anyone offer some assistance?

RSS

RSS = Rich Site Summary/Real Simple Syndication

At vet.edna.edu.au there is a link to a slide cast "RSS for Educators" (http://docs.google.com/present/view?skipauth=true&id=dvpk9nm_66wj633cfw) that provides classroom applications for RSS as a small part of the presentation. Refer to slide 61 onwards.

Some applications suggested in this slide cast include:
  • Have students subscribe to each others blogs and/or the teachers blog
  • Have students and parents subscribe to your blog, podcast, or wiki feed to keep abreast of what is going on in class
  • RSS Feeds for News, Blog, and Website Searches
  • RSS Feeds for Bookmarks
  • All the feeds can be aggregated with the same feed readers used for blogs, podcasts, news, and other media sites
  • RSS Feeds for Media
  • Media hosting sites (e.g. YouTube, Flickr, etc.) organize individual media content (images, video, audio) with tags"

460616 Week 3

Have set up a wiki as a Personal Learning Environment (see Online Communications section in this blog). This has been great to bring together, in one spot, all or some of my experiences, resources, ideas, information etc. relative to my learnings in the area of IT in education.

Thinking of setting up something similar for my resume/CV.

460616 Week 2

Am curious how I will make best use of a wiki and a blog?

Think I will start a social bookmarking account. Have used delicious in the past tried to reactivate but have to start a new account with yahoo to use it. I dont want another online account, or another email address...it get so messy!!!!

OK already the blog has got me to connect or link all my accounts together on the blog. eg. podcast, delicious, voice thread etc. Perhaps now I will use them as they easily accessed.

460616 Week 1

Have just completed the first Skype discussion and its great to hear that this unit will not require listening to recorded lectures and has an experiential learning approach. I am thinking at this point that this environment will be like an online folder where I will keep all the information and learning so that when the access to the unit disappears after the unit is completed I will still have a record of resources and things I found to be important/interesting/of use in the future..

I have selected a wiki for PLE as I am familiar with this wiki environment. I like the ability to organise the learning into sections (pages) and that it easy to embed widgets, files, images, videos etc.

I considered facebook but do not wish to share my learning journey with all my facebook friends - not that I have hundreds.

However may change my mind and use google groups - see what happens next week after further discussion. I am not sure about access to google groups for others to contribute i.e. if they have to have a google account.

Virtual Learning Environment assessment:

Starting a new job in Faster care and Friends of Foster Care in recruitment, assessment and training. Considering setting up a learning environment for training, induction and strengthening the volunteer carers network across the region.Starting on 22-3-10 so will have to suss that out.

Thursday 11 March 2010

OK so finding a blog useful as an access point for all my online stuff. Its easy to add links and connections. However still like a wiki for organising information rather than date order posts.

460616 Flexible Learning Environments

Have not used this Blog for a long time. Thought I might reuse rather than set up a new blog for Flexible Learning Environments (460616). Want to reduce my "virtual" or "cyber" waste.
